DR.ME / One Day Brief

OUGD603
PROFESIONAL VISITORS / DR.ME
ONE DAY BRIEF.

During the morning, The two partners from DR.ME talked about the type of practice the participate in as a Design company as well as how they got to where they are today.

there company is based in Manchester and the main focus of there would is with in the music agency. During their talks they showed examples of their and explained the way in which they work through the inspiration of the music they are working with as well as how this all ties in with different timescales. They also spoke about where they originated and how they became a partnership aft completing their degree course at the same establishment.

Looking through there work the aesthetic that they prefer to work with is the hand-rendered collage method that all comes from the feelings and ideas that are generated through listening to the music supped by the client.

To work on the briefs we were placed in pairs depending on where are names are on the register. Whoever's name is next to yours on the register. The briefs that were given to us were actually live briefs that the guys at DR.ME had completed. This was so we could get a grasp of how this particular design studio worked and interacted with their clients.

I was paired with Antony White.

BRIEF 1
This brief was to create a vinyl cover for a mixed track called Duga-3. The music was put on and played in the studio while everyone got to grips with the project so we could gather inspiration and ideas from what we were hearing.

Ant and I both agreed that the music was vary continuous and and neutral, This gave me the impression of big open space, where as Ant said it reminded him of some kind of metamorphoses. We both thought about perhaps going out side to take photograph different things that were close by such as the copper building down the road and perhaps some nature like images that can be found i some of the surrounding park in Leeds. However, due to the very short time period in which we had to work on three different briefs, we felt that are time would be better served closer to home.

W started looking and stock photographs choosing ones that we felt were suited to the ethos we felt the music was giving.

Here are a couple of the photographs that we found.

We started to take our favourite images separately and mess about with our own ideas and then come together and see what we had and how we could tweak them.

Because of the short time frame we had to work on this first brief, i didn't get chance to take any screenshots, however this is the design we eventually come ups with for the first version. (We were asked to make two).
As well as the feeling of space, the music to us felt quite industrial due to the distortion and sounds of machinery that appears through the track. The design above encapsulated these two feelings.

The second design again uses a combination of two images. This one was focused on wide open spaces.

BRIEF 2

This brief was to create a poster promoting the bad 'Odonis Odonis' and their up and coming gig. Before we started on this brief, we listened to some of the bands music as well as checking out their website which featured previous aesthetics from posters and album covers. Doing this we discovered that their ethos was quite vibrant and abstract. Again a couple of photographs and textures are used through out some of their existing stuff so we felt that this would be a good basis to start from.

Because we had spent so long on the first brief, we felt as though we were running short on time.

Ant created this version and it represented the tinny sound of the music. The circular appearance was inspired through the logo type image that appears on the bars web page. (We did want to use this but the image was to pixalated to place on the poster at a legitimate size). Ant manipulated the image in order to replicate this circular image and also give a little trick on the eyes.

Even though we both liked this design. W felt that it wasn't colourful enough or abstract enough to represent the band and their existing ethos.

For anouther variation and to add more colour and texture to our poster. I combined these to images together, however I enhanced the flower image and played with the hue and saturation to distraught the original image.

I overlapped the two images to create a texture and we added the text from the previous poster. Even though we wished we had more time to experiment more with these posters, this is what we had to settle on due to the lack of time and the fact that we still had to complete one last brief.

BRIEF 3
Brief three was simply to create a piece of work for no reason.

At first I was finding it hard to create something without a reason for doing so as this is something I have not been able to do for a long time.

Because if this decided to develop an idea I had a couple of years ago using images that have been taken of one of my favourite places in the world. I am always amazed by the colours that appear in this place.

Taking inspiration from the way in which DR.ME work through collage I created this image which is a collection of photos I have taken from many trips to the town of Kekova in Turkey.

I did enjoy this day of working with DR.ME. I feel it gave a very good example of how a small design studio works often getting briefs that have to completed in a day. Even though I feel that the work generated through this particular studio is very specific to the music industry and the work that they produce are very similar in methods and techniques., they are a good example of how you can find yourself in the market and making sure you are doing work that you enjoy and therefor gain more success.

I liked the way that you could just take something and just run with it instead of having to justify every step you take and I think this is the way when designing for music as most of the time you are designing from inturprritaion which can only eve be a personal thing.

I feel that Ant and I had a very productive day and even though the last 2 briefs seems a little rushed, I think that our outcomes were successful and fitting to the clients they were created for.
