PACKAGING POSSIBILITIES
TESTING & MOCK UPS.
Sarah had previously looked at nets because she has multiple boxes at home as she does a lot of online shopping. I used this scaled down diminution to test with initially just so I could get an idea of how the boxes would work.
This idea worked pretty well, but again, it would not be suitable for mass production.

NETS AND BOX COMPOSITIONS.
Since coming up with possible nets, I have encountered some issues with the workings of the packaging. Because the box has to be ripped to open it, this means the content inside would not be held straignt which is a big issue concerning the initial presentation of what ever is inside. Also, once the box has been ripped, the box is then useless just incase the buyer wants to send the product back.

Because of this i had to think about an inner shell to the box that would be preserved after the outer layer had been wrapped. this would make sure that the content could be presented in a professional way.
I came up with the idea above to try and preserve both either ribbon concept and the content and I liked at first but the realised that we would be using way too much packaging. In essence this would be basically packaging the item twice with an inner and outer shell. this was not viable for us or the brief.
I talked to Sarah about the issue I was having with the concept and she agreed that this would be too wasteful in regards to the about of materials used.
Sarah sent me through this idea of having the perforation around the side of the box so the packaging would have a base and a life. I did like this idea because of the fact the box had a lid and the box could be kept. A box with a lid is also great for presentation value as it adds to the sense of unveiling However I didn't think that we could just have a box with a bow printed on the top, I felt that this defeated to object and concept a little.
I mentioned this to Sarah and she agreed. Although we could keep this idea as a back up plan if we couldn't figure out anything else in time.
I continued to look at ways we could make this concept work professionally, I was determined to figure out a way could make this ribbon idea work because Sarah and I both felt that it is a really strong concept but only if we can make it work well!
After deliberating and working through the issues I had encountered with the last designs, I managed to find a solution. This box sees the ribbon perforated on the top layer of the box which the flow outward revealing a simple box with flap lid underneath. i then though that these two top flaps could the be removed again through perforation leaving the box and flap lid.
This composition not only sees the ribbon concept working well and as intended but also means that the actual box can be kept by the recipient and re-used as storage killing two birds with one stone. This also means that there is a big reduction in waist.
I showed Sarah what I had come up with and she agreed that this should be workable. I went on to test this idea and to make sure that it could actually work in a real world situation.

PACKAGING DEVELOPMENT
Sarah had already looked at creating nets for each of the boxes, she sent me these so I could last the way they worked. This is the larger box and the net that Sarah sent, the hashed lines are to represent the perorated bit would be situated and were the ribbon would be printed.
This net didn't work so well just because the attachment flaps were too small and the industrial style that we needed in order to simulate the true manufacturing method. I also felt that it would be better if the perforated strip would run from the bottom to the top on the landscape view of the box, this way it would simulate the undoing of the bow a lot better.
This is the net that I adapted and that I feel will work better I regards to the production and putting together of the box. I also added some little tabs and slits that I thought would help the lid of the under layer sit in place and hold better.
I printed out the net on a small scale to test. I made up the box and scored along the perforation line to test the ribbon aspect.
The perforation worked really well and the flap fold back revealing the box underneath. Tis could be were we have the John Lewis logo.
Even though I felt that the way in which the perforated flaps came off was a great finishing touch, i don't think the lid of the inner box worked to well and was a bit flimsy considering their is a box that is meant to be kept as well as deliver goods safely.
I adapted the net again and created a more substantial lid that would sit underneath the perforated flaps.
This worked really well and was a lot more substantial to the other version! All i had to do for the smaller, slimmer version of this box was to adapt the dimensions to the same layout which wasnt difficult at all.
I then turned my attention to how I could make the tall box work with the same concept. I really wanted to make it so this box was also keepable even though this wasn't essential due to its unorthodox shape.
Again, I was running into the same issue of using too much material when trying to compensate for the underneath layer in order to make the box keepable.
I came up with this net the saw the supporting structure fold up inside and the outer layer folding around this structure. However the net was just too big and awkward for has production so I had to think about cutting it down somehow.
I tried to solve this problem by cutting down out the lower supporting flap. Even though it worked will, I had to cut down the other to flaps to the lid could swing back one forth to colas and open the box. With the other flap gone, this also meant that there was a big gap left at the from of the box just underneath the lid.
I know this didn't matter too much but i felt so close to figuring this out that I carrie on going to come up with a solution.
I showed these to Sarah and she was really happy with the outcome. I adjusted the illustrator files accordingly so we could then upload them to the laser cutter. i sent them to Sarah as she had used the laser cutting equipment recently and knew how the document needed to be set up.
I am really happy with how this neats and mock ups have turned out and I can't wait to see them to the correct scale and in the cardboard material we are planning to use.
