DBA / Idea Development / Group Meeting

OUGD603 / EXTENDED PRACTICE
IDEA DEVELOPMENT.
CREST ICONS.

After the feedback we gained from the DBA guys during the workshop. I felt we were a lll a little lost. I decided to go back and look at the icon idea, just to see what also I could get from it.

I started to draw out a couple of idea son paper and looked at refining each of the icons on the crest.

I liked the idea of reducing each coat of arms down to extremely simple, new shapes.

The far left is the basic shape of the sheep skin in the harness shown on the leeds crest.
The three stripes represents the rivers that run through Manchester, which are also present on their coat of arms.
The 2 triangles represent the liver bird that has these sea plant in its beak.
The last one shows the basic shape of a crown.

I liked this modern approach and felt it added a sense of futurism and modernity that is need for the project.

I also looked at ways colour could effect these shields and how size and composition of the shapes inside could work.

I liked the thought of the shapes, i their shields being able to lock together, making a great pattern.

I also looked at how I could incorporate all of the shape in one of the shields. I liked the idea of having all the shapes work together as this could represent the collaborative nature each of the cities in the Northern Powerhouse wold work.

I decided to digitalise these shapes and see what other possibilities I could come up with.

I liked having the symbols aligned vertically as I think it make the appearance look almost like a flag. I also think they work well like this because the straight edges conform better when stacked on top of one another.

I added colour to see how this would work. i liked the idea of colour coordinating the shapes as this would also work to differentiate the individual cities. I laos felt that using vibrant colours gave the symbols more character and a more friendly feel.

I also made a patten from these shapes and the different colours and I feel this worked well. It almost gives an abstract feel.

GROUP MEETING

After the day of work and feedback workshop with the DBA guys, we were all a little lost and stuck with our ideas. Even though we had a few good concept, none of them really clicked and made us think that they were work able and viable for this project.

we decided to meet and talk about what it is we wanted to do and what we wanted to get from this project. We could tell that the DBA guys weren't really excited about are work and this really made us want to gather pace and make something that we could all be proud of and show exactly what we are capable of.

We met up again and even though we liked my concept and graces concept. We were all a little deflated as we didn't think these concepts could carry us to a successful solution.

We decided to drop everything we had been working on a start again. We started to discuss new, fresh ideas and concepts for our project as we felt that we could push and make into an exciting and successful solution.

NEGATIVE & POSITIVE SPACE
I thought about the possible notion of positive and negative space. We really liked the idea of the fact that most at tensioned had always been given to London and the south. This could intern be perceived as the positive space with the rest of the country being seen as the counterpart and negative space.

We thought about different ways we could implement these concepts and looked at how we could reflect the North of the country being the positive space and the south being the negative space. We could work on the fact that london is cramped, this is why it is negative space. The northern part of the country has a lot of space which equals fresh air and freedom and is therefor positive space.

I also thought about how we could apply this to certain platforms and thought it would be cool to have all the energy and colour at the top of whatever we were applying our aesthetic to so this could simply signify the exciting things that are up north.

PASSPORT UP NORTH
I also had the idea of possibly creating an identity that worked off the notion of a passport. This could work using the sense of wanting to get away and seeing the North as a desirable place to go to, live and work from. I thought this could be cool as we could play with the aesthetics of a passport and apply this across multiple platforms in a clever way.

We decided to go away and recuperate and look at these ideas and others and look at how we could come up with a suitable and exciting solution.
