INITIAL IDEAS / PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.
DBA FEEDBACK.
I initially I really liked the idea of working with the crests of each cry and coming up with a cool way to combined them. I liked this idea due to the fact that in the first briefing the DBA guys were really pushing the concept of being able to develop the idea of the Capital North into a supercity of its own. this way the crest could represent each of the cities and individuals places but would also combine them to create a new identity for the Capital North its self.
Top left: Hull, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester
I decided to take some of the most prominent and integral pieces of each of the coat of arms and recreated them using simple lines and shapes.
The bee was taken from the manchester coat of arms and represents the worker bee ethos of this particular place. The horn was taken from the figure of neptune, the God of water, which is taken from the fact that this city is a port location. The crown shape was taken from the hull coat of arms and the owl from the Leeds coat of arms.
I looked at different ways I could apply these icons and looked at how they could be displayed and arranged in a way that communicates the sense of unity.
I looked at arranging the icon vertically which I quite liked as it looked more refined. i also thought that, depending on the city you were actually in, the icons could rotate with the most relevant one being situated at the top.
I also looked at applying the icons into a repetitive pattern which I think works well, however I was not satisfied with the aesthetics this icons were giving off. i felt as though I need to refine and simplify the aesthetic even further to make the identity look more modern and almost futuristic regarding the fact that we are looking at a project that would be in flow several years from now.

GROUP MEET & DEVELOPMENT
As a group we sat together and showed each other what we had thought of and come up with since the last meeting.
I showed the group my icon ideas and how they reflect the crest of each of the cities. I also mentioned that i wasn't really happy with the aesthetic and thought it would need a lot of work.
Grace had a couple of good ideas that were derived from the actual map and the way in which the cities were situated across the country. She had looked at how she could take these distances and create shapes with them.
This particular visual sees each of the dots represent each of the cities and how they are shown on the map. Grace then used different colours to represent each of the journeys.
This visual Grace created uses circular shapes and opacities and again shows each of the cities and the journeys the railway would take in between each of them.
Again Grace used the concept of the distances between each of the cities and applied this idea in a different way using lines and layout. W all felt that this logo felt a little corporate even though we liked that the shape resembled a skyscraper which could be relevant in regards to the powerhouse and supercity image we are trying to present.

DBA FEEDBACK / IDEA DEVELOPMENT
As we sat in our groups, the DBA guys walked around to each of the groups and listened as we explained out current ideas and the concepts behind them.
They liked the shapes I had created and thought they represented friendliness as well as simplicity.
They also made reference to the Unileaver logo and how this identity was created using multiple icons which then make up a larger letter form.
They also liked graces ideas and concepts that showed this distances and the different ways in which we could represent them and make them into visuals.
Dring the discussions with the DBA guys, we explained to them that we were worried about having an identity that looked to corporate. They explained that using basic layouts of a logo is always going to make thing look corporate. Because of this we should reframe from applying any text with in our visuals as simply work of the concept and idea behind the aesthetic. Then the rest will follow.
They recommended that we focus our attention to the concept rather than rushing into creating an identity.
I feel that because we were so eager to make an impression to these successful professionals, we got caught up in the actual brief and aesthetics rather than fully emerging ourselves into a clever and powerful concept that we could then use as a foundation to build our project on.
They suggested that we should carry on looking at a developing the idea of the distances and how these ca be visualised. they liked Graces circular application and how circles are seen as friendly shapes due to there softness. They also thought that the circles could represent deeper meaning like the cps in an engine as well as cellular devision.
We agreed as group that we would go away and look at these concepts and how we could develop them.
