DBA / New idea development / Group Meeting

OUGD603 / EXTENDED PRACTICE
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT.
NEW IDEAS.

Like Grace had previously done, I looked at creating a shape from the points on the map. I thought then it might be cool to experiment with this shoe and apply colour and different opacities to see what kind of texture I could create.

I digitalised this idea and started to experiment with colours and shapes.

I liked at how I could add gradient through the different shapes and how this could fade through different colours as I thought that this too could enhance the feeling of vertical flow.

I also tried a couple different colours and variations. I really like the combinations and feel they kind of look like landscapes and sunsets, especially when the darker colours are situated at the bottom.

I sent these samples to the rest of the group as we had set up a group on Facebook so we could interact with each other even if we weren't at collage.

Every one seems pleased with these visuals and liked the vibrance a textures they were going off.

Grace had also been working on some possible logos regarding the negative and positive space concept we had talked about previously.

Grace created this mark by combining the C and N of Capital North. Using the focus of negative and positive space she also added in a little chevron type shape in-between the two letterforms.

Not only does this mark represent fluidity and connect ability through the curving shape, It also hints at an upward direction with the chevron pointing North. We all really liked this concept and logo and though that it would be a great visual to represent our Capital North.

I really liked the concept behind this logo, however I felt it needed a little tweaking I think the roundedness of the looping curves look a little too soft and friendly.

I feel that because the Northern Powerhouse will need to be seen as powerful and reliable, it needs to be a strong and impactful and look sturdy in order to give off this reliable and professional ethos.

I looked at adapting Graces logo slightly. I made it so the letters looked like they were more capital letters by sharpening the top of the N slightly as well as made the lines have square edges. I felt this gave the logo a more authoritative feel yet still has that approachable aspect through the curves that are still present. I also feel it looks a little more futuristic which is essential considering when this scheme would actually be excited as well as representing the high end technology that will be present when the scheme is in situation.

I looked at adding this logo to the different colours and shapes I had experimented with previously. I really liked the vivd colours and I felt that the logo really complimented this aesthetic. I sent these examples to the group over Facebook and they all seemed to really like these designs.

I then started to look at how I could use the concept of the negative and positive space and how all the excitement and colour could be situated at the top of whatever platform to then signify the great things that happen up north.

Adam looked at expanding the logo and different ways this could be arranged. Here we really liked the main mark and the accompanying test alight vertically as well as were the mark is larger and the text sitting at the bottom left.

The text underneath of the main mark would then alter depending on the relevant city.

Adam then looked at taking my shape and colour concept and pushed it that much further with multiple variations. These looked amazing when all shown together.

GROUP MEETING

After the weekend of realignment and developmental work we all got together to see what we had and how we could start and apply it to the relevant platforms in order to show are concept and visuals in the bast possible contexts.

LOGO - We were all happy with the more refined logo as well as the variations Adam had made with the accompanying type.

COLOURS - We wanted to make sure that each of the cities could be differentiated from each other even though the overall concept could be recognisable to the one Capital North brand.

We all chose these colours to represent each of the cities. We made sure that each colour was completely different to avoid any confusion.

These are the logo versions that correspond with those chosen colours.

We also decided to sit and think about words that we felt could represent each city. We went back to each of our initial city research to think of aspect we could pick out and exploit. So for example we thought, capital of music, Manchester could be the capital of media, Hull the capital of adventure and Leeds could be the capital of Enterprise.

As we were trying to think of these describing words, we actually found it really difficult to pick woods for one city that weren't ten applicable to one of the other cities. because of this dilemma we figured it would be so much better if the words could just apply to all of them. This way all of the words would then represent the capital North rather than just a single city.

We thought about the idea that we could just have the sentence -

The Capital of:

and then add all of these words in and have them change whenever. So you could see all of the options but they could be faded out. Then each word could roll into the sentence representing all the benefits of having these cities working together.

We then came up with a list of words that we felt well described the cities on a whole.
